Our environment needs to be protected and technology can make huge contributions in many sectors, such as renewable energy, in the fight against climate change and global warming.
At Solar MEMS we have applied all the know-how accumulated through years of experience in the aerospace sector and focused it on the technology of solar sensors for terrestrial purposes. What is more, we have been able to do this without sacrificing performance or reliability in solar tracking.
One of the main challenges we have faced in the application of solar sensors to terrestrial purposes was to achieve high precision and reliability, while lowering the cost of devices to encourage businesses to invest in solar energy. We can also affirm that we have done it while Solar MEMS has also been, as always, deeply involved in research to make further improvements.
We offer a wide range of solar sensors called Industrial Solar Sensors (ISS), which are for terrestrial use and measure the angle of incidence of a source of sunlight and its level of radiation. The most obvious applications of this technological advance by Solar MEMS are for the capacity to follow the sun and sources of light, tracking systems, attitude monitoring, measuring solar radiation, controllers for solar tracking platforms and calculating the altitude of drones.
We have also taken part in projects based on renewable energy like Sigmaplantas, which include the design and development of a microplant of heliostats to concentrate solar radiation for a cogeneration receiver to generate electricity and store hot water. The Solar MEMS team participated in the design and development of a heliostat with solar sensors for highly accurate tracking of the sun’s rays, to concentrate the solar power in the receiver. The project included solar tracking, CPV cells, and solar plant distribution.
Knowing how to locate the sun’s energy and its radiation can greatly benefit the environment because it makes solar power much more efficient, as one of the most powerful sources of energy in our fight against climate change. Among other reasons, solar power does not emit greenhouse gases, so it does not contribute to global warming and makes it a great alternative to the use of polluting fuels like petrol or coal.
For all the above reasons, we can state that we don’t just work on space technology at Solar MEMS, but we are also at the service of renewable energy to ensure the conservation of our planet. In an interview, we asked Manuel Rodríguez, CTO of Solar MEMS, how the technology of our company can help to protect the environment, to which he said “We have always supported our customers when developing new technologies for energy harvesting like solar panels, Stirling engines, parabolic troughs, concentrator photovoltaics, etc. Our technology is very important in all those models because they need solar tracking, and we have sold our products to many universities and research projects all around the world during recent years to develop these technologies, to protect the environment and our only planet”.
